How to approach your international career opportunities 国外求职机会分享

On Dec 15th, Career Development Center invited Julia Zupko, Director of Career Services for Schwarzman College, to give the sharing about abroad career opportunities. Nearly 40 graduates, undergraduates and MBA students attended the event, and among which, there are almost 10 foreign students. This year, Tsinghua SEM collaborated with Schwarzman College related to students’ career development for the first time. This sharing is the second event of the collaboration, after the sharing of <How to enter the Chinese government> for Schwarzman Scholars. 

2017年12月15日,2019新版跑狗图特别邀请了苏世民学院职业发展中心主任Julia Zupko为经管同学们带来一场针对海外求职机会的分享。近40名本科,硕士,博士和MBA对海外求职机会感兴趣的同学到场。其中还有近10名外国学生。今年清华经管学院与清华苏世民书院首次达成职业发展服务合作,本次活动是继12月7日《苏世民学生如何进入中国政府工作》活动后的第二场交流活动。

At the beginning, Julia raised up a few questions to learn about the present students’ structure and their future career geography. The result showed that most of the students were planning to work in the U.S., Europe, Asia and others were more willing to work in their home country. Moreover, Julia introduced general resources of overseas recruiting markets such as the GMAC Employer Report.

一开始,Julia用几个与同学们自身非常相关的问题了解同学们的构成,以及同学们预计求职的国家。同学们感兴趣的国家有美国,欧洲,亚洲,以及外国学生的生源国。接下来,Julia向同学们整体介绍了国外招聘市场信息的渠道,报告,如GMAC Employer Report。


In addition, Julia explained the difficulties of seeking overseas career opportunities for both Chinese and Foreign students. Language, background, culture difference and the switch of job function and industry could make the overseas job seeking even harder. However, Julia offered specific suggestions about how to overcome these difficulties. For example, qualities such as patience, openness were considered valuable. And one should spend quite a lot of time to do research and analyze the market and positions. Moreover, students could organize their own job lists and compare them with the analyzing result. To be more specific, Julia shared with students about the Job searching tool list and two useful books-- <The International Advantage><Power Ties-The International Students Guide to finding a job in the United States>.

Julia用形象的PPT为同学们解释了中国同学去海外,或者外国同学去其他国家工作的难点,除去语言,还有背景,文化,甚至还有职能和行业的转换,都会使海外求职难上加难。但是Julia也就这些难点给出了有针对性的具体建议,如需要有耐心,开放的心态,同时需要付出更多的时间进行调研和整理,并且针对自己的求职需求整理出一份属于自己的清单,然后与市场数据进行比对。更具体的,Julia整理了针对国际招聘的实用网站清单,以及两本求职必备书籍。<The International Advantage> <Power Ties-The International Students Guide to finding a job in the United States>.


In the end of the sharing, Julia spent more time answering the students’ questions. Foreign students were more interested in the opportunities in China or oversea market development for Chinese companies whereas Chinese students asked more questions on how to approach overseas working opportunities such as in the United States. To answer these questions, Julia explained in detail with examples about how to process working visa or how to access the international organization. In addition, Julia suggested that the students should read every day, no matter local newspapers, global newspapers or industry related magazines.

最后Julia把更多的时间留给了同学们提出自己的问题,从外国学生如何在中国工作,或者为中国公司开拓海外市场,到中国学生如何找到国外的机会,Julia更有针对性的向同学们解释了更多实操性的问题,包括不同国家的工作签证问题,到国际组织的机会以及如何进入等等。Julia也建议同学们应该每天保持阅读,本地报纸,国际报纸,以及感兴趣的行业的相关杂志等等。
